The Digital Drop Box - For Students - Print-Friendly Version

There are two areas in the Digital Drop Box and two steps you MUST follow - Add File and Send File .  We ask that you use both steps to assure your file has been sent to your instructor.

Step 1 - The Add File area allows you to conveniently store your assignments and course documents within your course site.

Step 2 -  The Send File area is used for sending the files in your Add File area to your instructor.  Your instructor can NOT access or see your Add File area.  You must send the file to your instructor using the "Send File" area.

Important:  Accepted File Formats
Word Perfect and Works documents can not be opened by your instructor.  Also, you will not be able to open Word documents sent to you by your instructor within either of these programs.  You only can open a Word document with Microsoft Word or the Microsoft Word converter.   We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you use Microsoft Word or convert your documents into RTF (Rich Text Format - .rtf) or HTML ("Save as Webpage" - .html).  If you have Adobe Acrobat software, you also can send your assignments in a .pdf format.  You can only do this with Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Acrobat Reader.  There is a difference.

Did you know: Word Perfect and Works allow you to save your documents as Word (.doc) or Webpage (.htm or .html).  When you save your document, use the Save As function in the File menu, click the drop-down arrow next to the Save as type text field (bottom of Save As dialogue box) and select Word, Webpage, or Rich Text.

Most instructors at Myers University require you to use Microsoft Word for composing and sending your assignments.  Microsoft Word is an "industry standard".  If you do not have Microsoft Word on your computer, you can use a computer in a Myers University lab.  The word processing application is also available for your use at your local public library.

Step 1 - Add File

Use Add File to store a file in the Digital Drop Box to send later or retrieve from another computer.
PLEASE NOTE:  Uploading and saving your file in the Add File area does NOT  send the file (assignment) to your instructor.

1. Click on the Tools button on the left navigation bar of your Blackboard course site.  Next, click the link to the Digital Drop Box.

2. Click Add File.

3. Enter the title of your document in the Title text field and a description (with your name) in the Comments text box.

4. Click Browse to locate the file on the computer's hard drive or your temporary storage disk.  The Choose File  dialogue box opens (below) .  Locate and highlight (click on) the file.  The file appears in the File name text field.  Click Open.

5. The path to the file appears in the File text field next to the left of the Browse button.

Proceed to Step 2 and Click Submit.

6. A dialogue box appears with a warning that the file was added but NOT sent.  Click OK.

7. A message will indicate the document has been added to your Drop Box.

Click OK.

A link to the file appears in the content area.

Again, the file is added to the Digital Drop Box area, but hasn't been sent to your instructor.

Step 2 - Sending a File

Review Step 1 - Use Add File to store a file in the Digital Drop Box to send later or retrieve from another computer.  You MUST add the file first to assure the document is sent to your instructor.

PLEASE NOTE
:  Uploading and saving your file in the Add File area does NOT send the file (assignment) to your instructor.  To send a file to your instructor scroll down and follow the instructions for Step 2 - Send File.
1. Now that your assignment file has been added to and displayed in your Digital Drop Box list, click on Send File.

2. Fill in the Title and Comment text fields.  Include your name in the Comments box.

3. Since the file has already been added to your Digital Drop Box, use the Select File drop-down menu to select it.  Click.  A path is created to your file in the Select File text field (see below).

4 Proceed to Step 2 and Click Submit.

5. A message will indicate the document has been sent.

6. Click

7 The submission is recorded in your Digital Drop Box.  The file you previously added will now reflect the date and time you submitted it to your instructor.

Receiving and Reviewing files from the Digital Drop Box

You might want to make changes to your assignment; or your instructor will send your assignment back and require you to make specific corrections:
  1. Click the file's title to open it on your computer.
Note: this is a read only version of the file. Any comments or changes made to this file will not be saved in the Digital Drop Box.
  2. Save the file to your hard drive or a temporary storage disk (floppy or zip).
  3. Open it from your hard drive or storage disk and make your comments or corrections.
  4. Save the edited version indicating it is revised in the file name. (ex.  project1_edited or project1_revised)
  5. Add and Send the revised version of the file to your instructor by repeating Steps 1 and 2 in the Digital Drop Box.

Again, PLEASE NOTE: Word Perfect and Works documents can not be opened by your instructor.  And, you will NOT be able to open Word documents sent to you by your instructor on either of these programs.  You can only open a Word document with Microsoft Word or the Microsoft Word converter.

We highly recommend you use Microsoft Word or convert your documents into RTF (Rich Text Format - .rtf) or HTML ("Save as Webpage" - .html).  Word Perfect and Works allow you to save your documents as Word (.doc) or Webpage (.htm or .html).  Most instructors at Myers University require you to use Microsoft Word for composing and sending your assignments.
